WhatsApp marketing in India: grow with consent, not spam
How to use WhatsApp to bring customers back — the right way, without getting your number blocked.
WhatsApp is where Indian customers already talk to businesses. Used well, it brings customers back again and again. Used badly, it gets your number reported and blocked.
Start with permission
Only message people who have agreed to hear from you — for example by ticking a box on your website, sending you the first message, or saying yes at the counter. Keep a record of when and how they agreed. India's data protection law expects consent to be clear and easy to withdraw.
Use the WhatsApp Business Platform
For messages to many customers, use the official WhatsApp Business Platform through an approved provider. Promotional and reminder messages must use templates approved by Meta, and you can write them in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and other Indian languages.
Send what customers want
- Order and appointment updates
- Reminders customers asked for
- Occasional, relevant offers — not daily blasts
- Quick replies to their questions, in their language
Make leaving easy
Every promotional message should explain how to stop, such as replying STOP — and you must honour it at once. Fewer, better messages keep your number's quality rating high.
Measure
Track replies, bookings and opt-outs. If opt-outs rise, send less often or make messages more useful.
Doondo sends WhatsApp updates only to customers who agreed, records that consent, and stops immediately when someone opts out.
